Raising Awareness about Plastic pollution

We know we are not alone in thinking this way. But if our website can help spred the message a little further, then the time and effort we are making to share these ideas and products is well worth it.

The extent of plastic pollution is phenomenal…its hard to believe just how big the problem is. We recently watched the film ‘Plastic planet’ and we both had tears rolling down our cheeks. We can no longer enjoy playing in the water, sailing on it and doing all our water sports without at least thinking about and trying to change the way we personally pollute it.

  • Only 27% of plastic bottles are recycled. The rest sit in landfills where they can take up to 1,000 years to decompose.
  • One million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals die each year from plastic pollution in our oceans.
  • In one study by the U.S. Centres for Disease Control, nearly 93 percent of people tested positive for BPA (a potentially harmful chemical present in plastic products).
Sometimes a problem seems too big and we think that it makes little difference what we do personally. We are just one family. A drop in the ocean.

Think again.

We are putting together a list of eco friendly products to show you just how easy it can be to replace some of the plastic products you buy. By replacing them, we aim to virtually eliminate our single use plastic pollution in that area.

One of the best ways to fight plastic pollution is to live by example and ensure the products you buy are produced with both ethics and the environment in mind. So thats our challenge….we you join us in this challenge?

We don’t intend on getting rid of all the plastic we already have. The plastic storage containers, plates and cups that we inherited with the boat, we will keep and use for as long as we can. But when they eventually die, we will replace them with products made of materials that are better for the planet, and probably healthier for us too!

We are firm believers in reuse, repair and recycle. Buying articles made of recycled materials is an improvement. But it still uses a lot of energy and creates a lot of waste products to make a new product. We need to ask ourselves the question…do we really need it?

Please don’t forget to share the journey with your friends and family.  The more friends you convince, the more people you share articles like this one with, the more people will begin using environmentally friendly products in their everyday lives, and that is how we change the world.
